The OSRAM HQL 125W lamp (elliptical) is a OSRAM high-pressure mercury vapour lamp, robust and proven, running on a simple ballast without ignitor. It emits cool white light at 4,000 K (CRI 50) and about 6,300 lumens, with excellent stability over time.
It runs on matching control gear (Matching mercury ballast (no ignitor)) rated exactly for its wattage (125 W) and type: it never connects directly to the mains. Warm-up takes 2–3 min; after switch-off, let it cool for a few minutes before restrike.

What control gear is needed?
Matching mercury ballast (no ignitor) rated exactly for 125 W and this lamp type. It does not connect directly to 230 V mains.
How long to full light?
Allow 2–3 minutes to warm up. After switch-off the hot lamp will not restrike immediately: let it cool for a few minutes.
Check the base: E40 or E27?
This version has an E40 screw base (large “Goliath” size). The HQL 125 W also exists with an E27 base: check your luminaire's socket before ordering.
Precautions and recycling?
Use it in a suitable luminaire; handle it cold. It contains mercury: WEEE recycling, never with household waste.
