Is this lamp compatible with my old Super-8 or 16mm projector?

Yes, the P30S (prefocus) base and 8V voltage are the standard for amateur Super-8 and 16mm cine projectors from Bauer, Eumig, Bolex and equivalent brands. Just check that your projector uses an 8V/50W P30S lamp before ordering.

Why must the voltage be exactly right?

A low-voltage lamp like this one is designed around a very precise filament: powering it at anything other than 8V greatly shortens its life or damages it immediately. Always use the projector's original power supply.
