The E10 3.8 V miniature bulb draws 0.07 A, about 0.27 W: a tungsten filament in a glass envelope the size of a grape. It is the lamp of indicator lights and control panels, the one that has been showing a circuit is live since long before the LED existed.
Its first quality is that it asks for nothing. No polarity to respect, no resistor to work out, no driver: DC or AC, it lights. On an old industrial console or an original dashboard, that is what makes it irreplaceable — whereas an LED means checking the direction of current and sometimes adding a component.
⚠️ The decisive point is voltage. A 3.8 V lamp belongs on 3.8 V, within a few per cent. Under-fed it merely glows red; two volts over and it shines beautifully… then burns out within hours. Before ordering, read the value printed on the old lamp's cap, or measure the voltage at the holder.

Can I run it on another voltage?
No. A 3.8 V lamp tolerates only a few per cent either way. Two volts too many and the filament burns out within hours; two volts too few and it merely glows red. Check the actual voltage before choosing.
Can I replace it with an LED?
LEDs exist with the same E10 cap, but take care: on DC an LED imposes a direction of connection, and some monitoring circuits sense the filament to confirm the indicator is working. On those, an LED corrupts the diagnostic.
DC or AC?
Either. A filament heats the same way whichever way the current flows: this lamp lights just as well from a battery as from a transformer secondary, with no change to the wiring.
How do I read the reference?
Three values are enough: the cap (E10), the voltage (3.8 V) and the current (0.07 A) — from which the power follows, 3.8 × 0.07 ≈ 0.27 W. If those three match your old lamp, the replacement is right.
